Homemade Peanut Butter Alternatives

Homemade Peanut Butter Alternatives

Peanut butter is a staple in hundreds of thousands of households. From peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to a special treat for a four-legged friend, peanut butter is classic. However, there may be some concerns with store-bought peanut butter. It may contain added sugars or preservatives. Sometimes, it could be cross-contaminated with tree nuts or other allergens. Luckily, there are alternatives to peanut butter that you can make in your own home.

Nut butter is not limited to solely peanuts. In stores, you can find almond butter, cashew butter, or anything else you can imagine! Often, these alternative nut butters are free of preservatives and sugars, but it is crucial to pay attention to the ingredients. If you avoid peanut butter due to a peanut allergy, be careful with alternative butter. They may come into contact with peanuts during manufacturing, which can still cause an allergic reaction.  The same goes for peanut, sunflower, or soy butter with tree nuts.

To avoid cross-contamination, you may want to try making alternative nut butter at home! Although the task may seem daunting, it’s actually a lot simpler than it appears. All you need is a food processor or a high power blender, your nut of choice, and a little water.

You can choose literally any flavor you want or blend a few together. From almonds or cashews to sunflower seeds, the possibilities are endless! Different types of nuts will have different flavor and consistency, so you may want to experiment to see what you like. Here at Foods Alive, we have several varieties you may like to try. To make the nut butter, blend or blitz the nuts in parts to achieve the texture you want, whether that be crunchy or smooth. If you’re having trouble getting them to blend, add a little water until the process gets going. If you want a looser consistency, you can add more water as you go. You have total creative freedom!

Homemade nut butter can be a little thinner and runnier than storebought peanut butter, but you can adjust the consistency however you like. To thicken it up, simply place it in the refrigerator. You could even experiment with adding flavors like chocolate or cinnamon! There are no limits.
